Truss Loft Conversion - Useful Information

What is a Truss Roof

Roof trusses have overtaken rafters as the most popular way to create a roof frame. And there’s good reason why trusses have become more popular – they’re cheaper, more convenient, and extremely versatile.

Essentially, roof trusses create a roof’s frame. They determine the shape of the roof and ceiling, while providing support for the roof. Trusses are pre-engineered in a factory using lightweight materials, like 2x4s, and are shipped to the construction site. Trusses consist of three main parts:

  1. Top chords
  2. Bottom chords (also known as I-joists, or ceiling joists)
  3. Webbing/posts

How does a Truss Roof Loft Conversion work

The conversion from a trussed roof to a trussless roof simply involves the redistribution of the roofs weight from the trusses to beams running from gable to gable. This process involves the installation and use of steel beams.

Working closely with a structural engineer, we ascertain the required steel beams needed to achieve this redistribution of weight, and therefore open up the space to form the new living space.
